Interview with founder Marjan van der Herberg
I've been traveling all my life - and for the last 15 years, I've mainly been co-creating with other travelers.
With more than eighty countries visited and a lifelong career in the travel industry, Marjan van der Herberg is the driving force behind Rondreisopmaat.nl. She started exactly 15 years ago with the concept of cocreating with clients to design and realize individual tailor-made far-away tours, which was relatively unknown at the time. She started successfully with Southern Africa. 'I saw how our method caught on with our travelers and wanted to broaden that impact - to more continents, more travelers, more stories,' says Marjan.
In 2011 she stood proudly at the Vakantiebeurs for the first time with her own company: Rondreisopmaat.nl.
It has become a household name for travelers who value a trip that is tailor-made for them. The website grew into a meeting point for inspiration itineraries and tailor-made possibilities to all continents. From Africa and Asia to America and Oceania. Every year favorite countries of existing customers were added, with their own travel knowledge and experience always forming the basis. Together with a team of travel experts and local country specialists worldwide, Marjan thus lived her dream.
Thanks to the loyalty of loyal travelers, they emerged resilient after the tough corona period. Meanwhile Rondreisopmaat.nl has grown into a company with a loyal clientele that appreciates their personal approach.
2026 is a special year, because then they will celebrate the 15th anniversary of Rondreisopmaat.nl - a milestone that symbolizes love of travel, connecting people and stories.

Rondreisopmaat.nl arose from the simple idea that not every traveler fits into a standard program. Many people know exactly what they want: nature, culture, rest or adventure. But puzzling over the possibilities, routes, travel pace, distances and travel arrangements is complex. We take care of that. We listen, ask questions and design a trip that is right from day to day, 100% tailor-made!
This always involves a step-by-step approach and finding the right balance.
For us, every trip starts with personal contact and then we co-create the trip that fits seamlessly. Because this is naturally labor intensive, we like it when people have the intention to make the trip through us, precisely because we have nothing standard 'on the shelf'.
For that reason, we regularly work with an offer-fee or roundtrip advice-fee, which we consider to be thefirst down payment upon booking.
Personal
What distinguishes Rondreisopmaat.nl is the combination of knowledge, commitment and personal service. 'We work with local partners whom we know personally and are also actively involved in the realization of the trip. This allows us to combine the best things together. We can mix types of accommodations and transportation or adjust a route because we know that has the nicest psychological build-up or because certain roads are more difficult to travel in certain seasons. And should help or advice be needed along the way, there is always a safety net on site, through personal contact with the person who knows your trip. That personal contact is the basis of everything we do.
Favourite destinations
When asked about Marjan's favorite destinations, her heart still lies in the south of Africa. 'South Africa and also Namibia are overwhelming. The nature, the energy, the atmosphere, the diversity, the people, the animals and the beautiful light. There you still feel that nature is in control. And Asia also has a mystical attraction for me, especially countries like Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Actually, all of our tour destinations were developed because they are "favorites. Each country has its own unique characteristics and experiences to offer - it's all about getting the most beautiful diversity into a trip to really get to know a country to suit the needs of our travelers.'
The best moment is when clients tell us after their trip that it was perfect, that we understood their wishes and that our tips had added value. And especially that they experienced memorable moments and that their expectations were more than met. That's what we do it for!
