Here’s how to stay nice and warm, even at -20 degrees
Do you dream of a winter trip to Lapland, Finland, or other winter paradises? Think of vast snowy landscapes, the Northern Lights, husky sled rides, and maybe even a night in a glass igloo. Sounds amazing! But before you immerse yourself in this winter wonderland, there’s one important question: what do you actually wear when it’s -20 degrees outside?
Because trust us: cold toes can really get in the way of your fun during a winter adventure. Luckily, according to Léonie, there’s a simple solution: layers, layers, and more layers!

The secret to staying warm: layering
In extreme cold, it’s important to dress in layers. Multiple layers trap your body heat and keep you comfortable, even when the temperature drops well below zero.
Here's what you need:
1. The base layer: thermal clothing
Start with a thermal shirt and thermal pants. Wear these directly against your skin. Preferably choose thermal clothing made of merino wool or synthetic material. This helps you stay warm and wicks away moisture, so you don’t get chilled when you’re active.
2. The midlayer: fleece or wool
Wear a warm fleece or wool sweater over that. This layer traps the heat your body gives off. The colder it is, the more important this insulating layer becomes.
3. The outer layer: protect yourself from the cold and wind
Complete your outfit with a good winter coat and insulated ski pants. These will protect you from wind, snow, and moisture. That’s definitely no luxury, especially during activities like a husky sled ride or a snowmobile safari.
Don't forget your head, hands, and feet!
Keeping your body warm isn’t just about your layers of clothing. Your hands, feet, and head, in particular, deserve extra attention.
A warm hat, scarf, and good gloves are essential. Also, choose warm, insulated winter boots with enough room for thick socks. Shoes that are too tight can actually make your feet get cold faster.
Extra tip: Bring hand and foot warmers for times when you’ll be standing still outside for a long time, such as when you’re out admiring the Northern Lights.
